East Sussex College has revamped its services to employers. Vice Principal, Dan Shelley, whose brief is Enterprise, Employment & Skills, has renewed emphasis on local employers taking more ownership of the Skills agenda.
Working with local employers is a very important part of the college’s skills agenda.
We work closely with local businesses to develop and create courses and qualifications to provide our students with a pathway into employment once they have finished their studies with us.
Our partnership with local organisations extends right across the college, throughout Further Education and Higher Education, as well as into Apprenticeships and Adult learning.
Dan Shelley, Vice Principal for Enterprise, Employment & Skills believes the college can be a vital part of the formula for growth in Hastings and surrounding areas.
“We have already worked alongside a number of employers to help us direct our resources to meet their specific training needs. We have been successful in developing new accredited qualifications in Beauty, Catering, Engineering and Sport, as well as Higher Degree Apprenticeships."

TRAINING YOUR FUTURE WORKFORCE
Employers looking for staff can recruit from a pool of work ready people. In partnership with employers, the college designs short, intensive accredited pathways for local job-seekers, giving them the confidence and skills needed to fill local job vacancies.
Inside Track works in partnership with JobCentre Plus and other welfare to work programme providers to train local people for employers to interview, take on a work trial or directly employ. By working together the college can provide employers with a cost-effective recruitment process and support local people get back into work.
Apprenticeships have always had a very strong brand identity with the public, but the funding rules and limitations around the level that people could study up to created somewhat of a glass ceiling in terms of the impact that this qualification route could offer.
However, changes to apprenticeships that came into effect from May 2017 means that people can now take advantage of increased funding and an increased range of qualifications, right up to Master Level, regardless of their age or prior qualifications
In 2016, the college teamed up with Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne to form Sussex Skills Solutions. This new joint venture aims to be the premier provider of apprenticeships and skills training right across Sussex. Using the expertise of staff at both colleges, Sussex Skills Solutions is able to match a talent bank of apprentices with opportunities that are right for both the business and the student. They can also offer a bespoke training programme for businesses who wish to up-skill current staff.
There are over 30 apprenticeship programmes available, including a range of higher apprenticeships in key skill sectors such as engineering and care.
WORK PLACEMENTS AND VISITS
The college recognises the important role that work experience plays in the development of young people. It gives them a real taste of work and helps to improve their employability, ultimately helping them to stand out in the competitive world of work.
Each year, the college encourages new students to sign up for work experience in a sector and area that they are most interested in. Our dedicated team then work with businesses to find the perfect match for the student.
